End of a Journey.

Posted by Nigel Reed on Sunday, November 4, 2012,

Hi there everyone well its over not just the walk but a 22 year journey. There have been days of absolute joy and a day of the most gut wrenching pain when we lost our daughter.
Even one year of being emotional and mentaly lost.
There have been many people who have assisted me along the way far too many to mention today but they will never be forgoten.
This walk will not go down as generating the most money but will go down as one of incredible good will.
To enter Slacks Creek Primary school agai...

Missing in Action.

Posted by Nigel Reed on Saturday, October 20, 2012,
Well everyone sorry for being missing but been busy walking and trying to raise money we have reached Rockhampton and have done alright but have discovered I am not an athlete and I have aged although in my heart I like to believe other wise.

Once this is over I will be hanging up my walking sandals and taking time to build a new life allowing my late daughters memory to do the rest.

It has been a wonderful journey even though at times painful both emotionaly and physicaly but its not quite ove...

Posted by Nigel Reed on Tuesday, September 11, 2012,

To all the people both young and old who have Cystic Fibrosis thank you for your support over the last 10 months. We are 19 days away from the first marathon from Port Douglas to Palm Cove Surf Club and I do feel nervous because of injuries I have not been able to complete the best training. However I do feel better than I have ever, one thing on my side is there is no certain time frame to do the 42 km As long as I can manage my knee and foot issues my times should get better the longer we go....

Re-invention and Age.

Posted by Nigel Reed on Tuesday, September 4, 2012,
One of the challnges that I struggle with is the belief that it is possibe to re-invent myself at 68.Why re-invent you say?
Sadly we discover as we age that the business community place very little value on the elderly. So at 68 and relatively fit I wonder what my life experiences are worth and how they can help others.
The problem is lifes knocks have dented my confidence and I feel like a deer caught in the headlights of a speeding car, frozen not knowing which direction to move in.
I hope that ...

Posted by Nigel Reed on Thursday, August 30, 2012,
Tuesday and wednesday were good days 10km Tuesday & 90 minutes of interval work on wednesday while pushing my newspaper delivery push chair.Very high tech.
Thursday though my knee's ached I over did it BUT its Friday now and the knees are good must be a good sign.
I am confident now that I can jog/walk the 42km daily so will be cutting back the km and concentrating on high interval training TABATA.

Posted by Nigel Reed on Tuesday, August 28, 2012,
As a result of my stomach ulcers playing up after taking anti inflamatory tablets I had a bad night I woke up tired and low finaly I got to the gym and did a slow 5km run on the treadmill came home feeling good.
May sound silly when I will be doing 34 marathons over 34 days in 4 weeks but It left me feeling good.I would also like to say that once I checked facebook It was great to see how many friends I do have. There have been many times when I have been low and my faith has pulled me through....

Sausage Sizzles along the route.

Posted by Nigel Reed on Saturday, August 25, 2012,
Sadly there has been little support from people approached along the route for fundraising opportunities so we decided to approach butchers alon the route as we go up to hold sausage sizzles maybe we can raise some funds that way.

I must say a big thank you to Cheryl and Steve who have orrganised a launch at their own home and have provided the food as a sponsorship Cheers my two wonderful friends.

We understand that LJ Hookers Port Douglas are organising a walkathon to run along the day I star...

Posted by Nigel Reed on Saturday, August 25, 2012,
Well have had a good days training today 17km spread over the gym and road 8km interval training on the treadmill then 9km on the road over 2 hours so feel great.
Still no response from the local newspapers along the route plus no response from schools to talk to about bullying.
I am convinced that the time on the road will generate interest however we do have Greg Carey morning radio on side and he has indicated we will talk in the next 2 weeks hope so need funds for food and suppliments and f...

The Challengeof self doubt.

Posted by Nigel Reed on Monday, August 20, 2012,
Never Never Give Up.

Three statements made by others in my early Life unfortunately shaped the future " Be Careful what you say to You Children".The first was " You will never Drive" The second " You will never ammount to anything ". The third was " You are a waste of space".
Whatever people say do not surrender the wonderful flower that is just waiting to bloom its called potential !!! we all have it.

knee problem

Posted by Nigel Reed on Saturday, August 11, 2012,
After doing 8km yesterday although there was some pain during the walk I have not woke up with any discomfort so the anti inflamatory treatment is working GREAT.

We are only 6 weeks out from the begining and I do feel a a little aprehensive because of the time lost with the foot and knee issues but as my good friend Peter Why told me back on my first walk in 1990 " Just put one foot in front of the Other".

I can only imagine how my inspirational mentor who I never met by the way Terry Fox felt ...

Change of Doctor

Posted by Nigel Reed on Friday, August 3, 2012,

I I have changed Doctor as it has become a little like catch 22 with the numbness in my right foot being the same leg as my sore knee if I wear a knee brace I wonder if it could restrict circulation even more.

So with only 8 weeks before I set off from Port douglas I need to see what can be done with the knee tape strapping seems to make sense  but maybe a small op who knows.

I will be wearing my bedrock sandals (Modifide with a thicker rubber sole) the reason for that is to reduce jarring on m...

A little Boys challenge

Posted by Nigel Reed on Thursday, August 2, 2012,
In 1997 I spoke to a school in Southport i mention Terry Fox and how he had inspired me.The little boy put his hand up and asked If I would finish his dream.
In 2014 I will be 70 years of age but the little boys challenge still burns in my heart so if you live in Canada and have any involvement in Cystic fibrosis I will do my run across Canada for you guys in 2014.
So please if you can help by starting a network of supporters it would be great.

There comes a time to step down and others to step up.

Posted by Nigel Reed on Wednesday, August 1, 2012,
In 1987 a brief ad for the Terry Fox run of hope showing his courage and care for others changed my life his words ring true today.

I would like challenge others to first put the past behind them and then take a hard look around themselves and find who they can help.

Embark upon a journey of SERVICE and do not be suprised if people take note and follow.

Daily Challenges.

Woke to day feeling good soon to learn that it very often is our daily living challenges that stress us out.We had hoped that we could sell a few books along the route to improve our standard of living as pensioners on the stae pension. But a phone call from social security blew that away even though we have provided them with all the correct documentation we owe $1700 each for something in 2011.Doing a marathon every day for 34 days a walk in the park compared to dealing with beauracrats and ...

Birthdays.

Posted by Nigel Reed on Sunday, July 22, 2012,

Over my 68 years I have celebrated birthdays with a light hearted approach however today I saw a post on facebook where a young woman with Cystic Fibrosis had just turned 40 my comment was WOW.Why ? well how many friends had she lost? how many times had she been in hospital? how many hours of physio had she endured ? how many tablets had she taken?
I know how many Zoe did  in 11 short years.
So Friends next time we have a birthday lets for a second think about those who battle daily for their...

Health Issues

Posted by Nigel Reed on Sunday, July 22, 2012,
After a visit to the doctor it is obvious that the ankle pain i feel during the night is wear and tear over the last 20 years of training and walking for events. On Doctors advice I will be taking pain killers before i go to sleep. The other issue is periferal a artery disease this now leaves my feet very cold at night so the answer has been hand knitted bed socks.PAD also ccauses numbness to my feet when I have shoes on after about 20 minutes the only way round this will be intervals of joggin...

Wet Day.

Posted by Nigel Reed on Sunday, July 22, 2012,
Hi everyone a truly wet day put of my jog till the afternoon still raining must admit though it was a great feeling out there running along side the Ocean watching it churn wildly.Felt good at the end my right knee with Medical tape on stood up well.
Its a concern that we did not get a good response from schools in fact none at all plus a poor response from Caravan Parks.
One thing I learned from selling insurance is " EVERY NO GETS YOU CLOSER TO A YES".
Lets see what tomorrow brings.
